‘When We Were Very Young’ & ‘Now We Are Six’ by A.A. Milne

A. A. Milne’s poetry reminds me of a pretty trinket box of childhood treasures or precious diary filled with tiny pressed flowers and leaves.

The thick glossy pages are ‘decorated’ with drawings by E. H. Shepard and fittingly capture each poem’s mood and making them the gorgeous trinket boxes that they are. These books are a must have on any bedside table. For bedtime reading, why not add a poem as well? Children will relate to the imagination at play in each offering and if any of you adults have become too entangled in the neurons of logical adult brains, these poems will help find your inner child.

Some excerpts from ‘When We Were Very Young’

~SPRING MORNING~

…  If you were a cloud, and sailed up there,

You’d sail on water as blue as air,

And you’d see me here in the fields and say :

~TEDDY BEAR~

A bear, however hard he tries,

Grows tubby without exercise.

Our Teddy Bear is short and fat,

Which is not to be wondered at; …

Some excerpts from ‘Now We Are Six’

~SNEEZLES~

… Christopher Robin

Got up in the morning,

The sneezles had vanished away.

And the look in his eye

Seemed to say to the sky, ‘

Now how to amuse them to-day?’

~THE WIND ON THE HILL~

No one can tell me,

Nobody knows,

Where the wind comes from,

Where the wind goes …
