Saturday Is Swimming Day by Hyewon Yum

This story is about the first time swimming lesson jitters that kids may experience, and while physical symptoms can manifest in many forms, here it is a stomach ache, possibly a common ailment on such Saturday mornings for those with some initial reluctance to enter the water.

It is wonderful to see the parent and the instructor so calm and accommodating, letting the little girl sit out her first lesson on the edge of the pool. As the weeks’ progress, gentle encouragement from the instructor and brave determination from the girl, boosts her confidence until she no longer has the aching tummy.

The pictures which are in watercolour and coloured pencil, beautifully illustrate the characters emotions and the simple sentences are perfect for those who have just learnt to read.
