One hundred poems for every mother is a small, beautiful book of 103 pages, decorated gorgeously with colourful striking paintings, small motifs, and just flicking through stirs joy within.

The book resembles a pensieve to dive into and set your gaze upon the wonderful waves of emotions carried within motherhood. Poems of mothers soothing crying infants with sweet lullabies and whispering prayers over sleeping gems will have you bursting with love. Sometimes you will not find a happy heart, but one stricken with grief and sorrow, from death or misadventure.

There are words of advice flowing in these pages, from how to dress to whom to befriend. There are many joyful poems illustrating all the funny scenarios that mothers handle so well and sometimes not so well. The novice and experienced mother and grandmother have their stories told in these pages. Lovely poems about Mother Mary are so sweet to read too.

There are several poems you can read to the little ones, including ‘There was a little girl’, ‘Mummy, Oh Mummy’ by Anon, John Agard’s ‘Ask Mummy Ask Daddy’, Allan Ahlberg’s ‘Our Mother’ and ‘A Child’s Evening Prayer’ by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Anna Laetitia Barbauld’s ‘from Washing Day’ is like a history lesson that will help children understand there was a time when laundry took over the whole day and everyone’s effort! There a couple of wonders by Roald Dahl and Robert Louis Stevenson too.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,

How does your garden grow?

‘I live with my brat in a high-rise flat,

So how in the world would I know.’ Roald Dahl

Suggested reading age: A great book for poetry lovers, but not for the kid’s bookshelf, for mothers only.
