A Is For Australian Animals by Frané Lessac

This is a non-fiction picture book packed full of fantastic facts on Aussie animals, A-Z. The illustrations beautifully portray the orangy-yellow to bluey-green hues of the varied Australian landscape.

‘A’ shows a big map of Australia surrounded by definitions and details explaining why we have such unique fauna. So unique that one of the Aussie native creatures can produce ‘square poo!!

Learn all about the strange animals that call this continent home, including the Bilby, Blue-tongue Lizard, Death Adder, Frill-necked Lizard, Goanna, Hopping Mouse, Irukandji Jellyfish, Lyrebird, Marsupial Mole, Numbat and Platypus.

Did you know that Christmas Island is an Australian Island in the Indian Ocean, full of Red Crabs and the home to Robber Crabs too? Have you heard of the cute Quokka on Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia? Ever heard of a possum that can glide? Read all about them and many more in this awesome book.

At the end of the book, there is a page of animal distribution maps for each animal in the book: red- colouring the common areas where the animal is found. This is a great tool for kids to understand how to read such maps. We found that the Lyrebird, Marsupial Mole and Hopping Mouse are not native to our area in the east, but the Cockatoo and Blue-tongue Lizard are!
