The Cat In The Hat by Dr. Seuss

This is a tale of a fun-loving crazy cat dropping in on a rainy morning, with a hat full of tricks, turning the day from boring to shockingly amusing!

When two little kids dismally watch the rain from their window, they are resigned to just sit and do nothing until the cat in the hat arrives and stirs things up. Their mother is out for the day, but their pet fish opposes the cat with a stern voice from the start.

The cat does not listen to the fish. He starts the tricks with a very wobbly balancing act. Then, thing one and two arrive, who after a polite shake-hand, fly their kites inside. By the time they’re through, the house is a chaotic mess and mother has been spotted on her way back. The cat and the things are booted out, leaving the children with a massive clean up.

But the cat comes back with an awesome contraption that makes light work of tidying and for the first time in the book we see the fish and the kids smiling!

“I always pick up all my playthings

And so…

I will show you another

Good trick that I know!”

We loved when some words were repeated diagonally down the page like – Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit! and “So so so… which really captures childrens attention while reading. This is such an enjoyable read with wonderfully rhyming verse, just perfect to read out loud.

Suggested age: Read aloud to 3+. Read by self 5+. Recommended for a beginner reader.
