Santa Koala by Colin Buchanan & Glen Singleton

Midway through October is a great time to brush up on those Christmas Songs or learn some new ones like ‘Santa Koala’. This Australian Christmas story sings perfectly to the tune of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and we were delighted to sing along to the catchy tune.

Santa is soundly sleeping after a swim in the billabong and a drink of billy tea.

What will become of Christmas and the presents?

Enter Koala. You can’t stop a Koala with a plan!

Together with the other Aussie animal friends, they save the day. But wait there’s more! A final twist concludes this Christmas tale with a laugh.

Although Tomu wasn’t familiar with Waltzing Matilda till now, he caught on to the tune quickly and was singing the chorus off by heart in no time. The first two lines of the chorus are our favourite:

“Santa Koala, Santa Koala,

Off in a flap like a mad cockatoo”

Suggested age: Read aloud to 3+. Read by self 5+. Recommended for intermediate reader.
