Do you like green eggs and ham?
If you have a little one learning to read, you can’t go past Dr. Seuss books. Green Eggs and Ham was the book that took Tomu from sounding out words to outright reading.
In this book filled with rhyme, ‘Sam-I-am’ pesters a cat in a large hat to eat his breakfast of green eggs and ham.
Would you like them in a house?
Would you like them with a mouse?
This is me, with a plate of broccoli and promises of strength and speed, shinier hair, smoother skin and so on.
Sam-I-am relentlessly follows the big cat, imploring him to eat the green eggs and ham in various scenarios such as on a house with a mouse, in a box with a fox or with a goat on a boat!
Would you? Could you? In a car?
Eat them! Eat them! Here they are.
The rhyming is frequent and fast as the cat obstinately refuses and Sam-I-am comes up with different ways to try the food.
I could not, would not, on a boat,
I will not, will not, with a goat.
I will not eat them in the rain.
I will not eat them on a train.
It is a lengthy book (for the littlies) and we found it fun to take turns reading, but before long he was enjoying reading it all on his own.
The ending is wonderful because the cat finally tries the green eggs and ham and finds that he really likes it! So to the cats in my house: “try it, try it, even if it looks green and alien, you’ll like it!
